DISCOVERING AMISTAD
Discovering Amistad is a non-profit, educational organization that uses the 1839 Amistad uprising story and its 129 ft Amistad schooner replica as a” floating classroom “to address racial and social justice. The organization was founded in 2015, following a recommendation of the State of Connecticut Advisory Committee. Since its inception, DA has provided educational programming to over 10,000 students through its proprietary curriculum designed to highlight lessons about justice, freedom, and human rights.
The organization aims to share the incredible historical event while bridging awareness into contemporary social justice issues. Students are assisted in finding their voice and seeing themselves as change agents and leaders. Discovering Amistad is committed to facilitate inclusive education, generate courageous conversations, and mobilize agents of change.
The presence of Tall Ship Amistad, CT’s flagship, makes a powerful statement as it reminds us of how far we have come in the fight for freedom and yet how far we still have to go.

FIREWORKS BY BOAT
Saturday, July 8, 2023 @ 2:40 PM – 3:55 PM – Departing from City Pier, New London
Once the second largest whaling port in the world, New London has a rich history of seamen who made their living exploiting the ocean’s bounty. From its early days of sealing to the 1858 departure of the Nile, the ship which made longest whaling voyage on record, over 257 whaling ships making more than 1,100 whaling expeditions sailed out of the Thames River. Through views from the river, you’ll begin to appreciate the life stories of whaling captains and crews, the city’s dependency on the whaling industry, and the vulnerability of the seamen’s families while the men were out at sea … just a few of the 1000 stories in the Park.
100% of the profit from your ticket purchase benefits Thames River Heritage Park Foundation and helps to connect, support, promote, and sustain over 20 heritage sites and institutions along the Thames.
This boat tour departs from City Pier in New London.
