ABOUT THE 2ND ANNUAL NL MARITIME REGATTA

Sunday, 11 July 2010, the New London Maritime Cup Regatta again brings the sails to Sailfest. The Race Committee from Thames Yacht Club and the Sailfest regatta coordinators will fire off the first cannon at 11:00 to mark the official countdown to the start of the first race. Between 11:00 and 11:30 spectators will be able to view sailboats tuning up in the basin off Waterfront Walk between City Pier and the Coast Guard Station outside of Shaw's Cove.

There will likely be three or four classes of sailboats, generally from 22' to 35'-40' in length, mostly single masted sloops or unique catboats. Boats will carry one, two, three, or maybe even four sails. In particular, look for the Ensign Class and other unique groups of one-design boats. Most competitors will be from local yacht clubs. The race course goes south down the Thames River to short legs in Long Island Sound passing Ledge Light. Expect the boats to finish in the basin area of the start of the race between 2:00 and 3:00. Look for the ballooning spinnakers. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each class.
